plea bargain
A negotiation between prosecutor and defendant, by which the defendant agrees to plead guilty to a lesser crime. It is a compromise between the two parties that allows the case to be finished quickly. A plea bargain can be advantageous to the prosecutor because the defendant's conviction is guaranteed. It can also be beneficial to the defendant, who will be guaranteed a smaller penalty than if he were convicted of the crime for which he was originally accused. Selected plea bargain links: |
